Water Purification Guide
Safe water is non-negotiable in the wilderness. Different purification methods have different strengths — some remove bacteria but not viruses, some are fast but need clear water. This guide compares every major method so you can choose the right one for your trip.
Boiling
Bacteria
✓ 100%
Viruses
✓ 100%
Protozoa
✓ 100%
Chemicals
✗ No
Bring water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (3 minutes above 6,500 ft elevation). No equipment can fail. Reliable for all biological threats. Kills Giardia, Cryptosporidium, bacteria, and viruses.
Best for: emergency situations, base camps with fuel to spare, or when filters are unavailable.
⚠ Does not remove chemical contamination, sediment, or heavy metals. Let cool before drinking. Fuel-intensive for large volumes.
Squeeze Filter (e.g. Sawyer Squeeze)
Bacteria
✓ 99.9%
Viruses
✗ Most
Protozoa
✓ 99.9%
Flow Rate
Fast
Hollow-fiber membrane filter. Squeeze a soft-sided reservoir through the filter. Light, fast, and no chemicals. Sawyer Squeeze filters 0.1 micron — removes all bacteria and protozoa but NOT viruses.
Best for: North American backcountry, where viral contamination is rare. Good for streams, lakes, and rivers in wilderness areas.
⚠ Must backwash periodically to maintain flow. Can crack if frozen. In areas with heavy human activity or international travel, add chemical treatment for viruses.

Wait Time
30 min–4hr
Chlorine dioxide tablets (AquaTabs, Katadyn) are most effective — kill bacteria, viruses, and Cryptosporidium. Iodine does NOT kill Crypto. Wait time: 30 min for clear water, up to 4 hours cold/turbid water.
Best for: international travel, emergency kit, ultralight backpacking as a backup. Ideal when viruses are a concern.
⚠ Leaves chemical taste. Iodine not for pregnant women or thyroid conditions. Effectiveness drops in cold or turbid water.
UV Light (SteriPen)
Bacteria
✓ 99.9%
Viruses
✓ 99.9%
Protozoa
✓ Yes
Speed
~90 sec
UV-C light destroys DNA of microorganisms. Very fast (90 seconds per liter), no taste, no residue. Works against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa including Cryptosporidium.
Best for: international travel, areas with viral risk, travelers who want fast treatment without chemicals.
⚠ Requires batteries (bring backup). Does NOT work in turbid water — pre-filter through cloth or pump filter first. Lamp can break.
