VA Vocational Rehabilitation Benefit
VA Chapter 31 VR&E helps veterans with service-connected disabilities prepare for, find, and maintain suitable employment. Unlike the GI Bill, VR&E covers full tuition, fees, books, supplies — AND pays a monthly subsistence allowance on top. It's often called the "super GI Bill."
Reemployment
Return to your former employer after service-related injury. Provides accommodation counseling and employer negotiation support.
Rapid Access to Employment
If you already have marketable skills, get rapid job placement assistance, resume help, and interview coaching without lengthy retraining.
Self-Employment
Start your own business. VR&E can fund business training, licensing, equipment, and tools needed to run a veteran-owned business.
Employment Through Long-Term Services
Full educational program (2–4 year degree or vocational training). Tuition + books + supplies fully paid. Subsistence allowance throughout.
Independent Living
For veterans who cannot currently work. Provides adaptive equipment, home modifications, and services to enhance independence and quality of life.
VR&E covers up to 48 months of services (extendable for complex cases). There's a 12-year delimiting period from either your discharge date or your VA disability rating decision. Apply online at va.gov or with VA Form 28-1900. An evaluation appointment with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) is required before enrollment.
