Team Size & Span of Control Guide

Span of control — the number of direct reports per manager — is one of the most important levers in org design. Too wide and managers can't develop their people. Too narrow and you're burning budget on management layers.

Reference Benchmarks

Senior / VP+: 3–7 direct reports (strategic, high-complexity decisions)
Director / Manager (knowledge work): 5–9 direct reports
Manager (operational / support): 8–15 direct reports
Frontline Supervisor (routine work): 15–25+ direct reports
