Sentence Part Reference
Subject
Who or what the sentence is about. Usually a noun or pronoun.
The dog ran. → "The dog" = subject
Predicate (Verb)
What the subject does or is. Every sentence needs a verb.
She sings. → "sings" = predicate verb
Direct Object
The thing that receives the action of the verb. Answers "what?" or "whom?"
He threw the ball. → "the ball" = direct object
Subject Complement
Follows a linking verb (is, are, seems, becomes) and describes or renames the subject.
She is a teacher. → "a teacher" = complement
Modifier (Adjective/Adverb)
Words that describe nouns (adjectives) or verbs/adjectives/adverbs (adverbs).
"tall" in "the tall teacher" = adjective modifier
