Medical Expense Deduction (Schedule A)
Deduct medical expenses exceeding 7.5% of AGI — same threshold as non-seniors. Qualifying expenses include: premiums for Medicare (Parts B, D), Medigap, LTC insurance (age-based limits), dental and vision care, nursing home costs when primarily medical, home modifications for medical necessity, and prescription drugs.
LTC Insurance premium deduction limits (2026 by age):
Age 40–: $480 · Age 41–50: $910 · Age 51–60: $1,820 · Age 61–70: $4,870 · Age 71+: $6,090
Social Security Income Tax Treatment
Up to 85% of Social Security benefits may be taxable if your "combined income" (AGI + nontaxable interest + ½ SS) exceeds $25,000 (single) or $32,000 (married). If below those thresholds: 0% is taxable. Between thresholds and $34,000/$44,000: up to 50% taxable.
13 states exempt all SS income from state taxes (including FL, TX, WA). 9 more states exempt most or all retirement income.
Property Tax Relief
Most states offer property tax freezes, exemptions, or "circuit breaker" credits for seniors 65+. Benefits range from $500–$5,000+ in annual savings. Contact your county assessor's office or state Department of Revenue. Many programs require annual renewal.
Credit for the Elderly or Disabled (Schedule R)
Seniors 65+ with low income may qualify for a tax credit of up to $750 (single) or $1,125 (joint). Income limits are low — primarily benefits those with AGI under ~$17,500 (single). Often claimed through VITA free tax preparation sites (call 1-800-906-9887).
