Rule of Thirds Guide

The rule of thirds divides any frame into nine equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines. Placing subjects along these lines or at their intersections (power points) creates more dynamic, visually interesting compositions than centering.

Click anywhere on the canvas to place a subject dot at that composition point.

Power Points

The 4 intersections of the grid lines are where your primary subject should sit for the strongest composition.

Horizon Line

Place the horizon on the upper or lower third, never in the center. This determines whether sky or ground dominates.

Leading Room

When a subject is moving or looking, place them in the opposite third so the viewer's eye follows naturally.

Phi vs Thirds

The phi grid uses 1:1.618 proportions instead of equal thirds — subtly different, often used in fine art photography.
