International Driving Permit Guide
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your driver's license recognized in 150+ countries under the 1949 and 1968 Geneva/Vienna conventions. Search below to see whether your destination requires or recommends an IDP.
How to Get a US IDP
AAA (American Automobile Association) — Only AAA and AATA are authorized to issue IDPs in the US. Visit any AAA office. Cost: $25. Requires: valid US driver's license, 2 passport photos, application form. Issued immediately.
AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance) — Alternative issuer. Same requirements and $25 fee. Apply by mail or online.
Validity — IDPs are valid for 1 year from date of issue. Always carry your original US driver's license alongside the IDP — the IDP is a translation only, not a standalone license.
Not valid in the US — You cannot drive in the US on an IDP issued in your home country. You need a valid state driver's license.
Apply before departure — IDPs must be obtained in your home country. You cannot get a US-issued IDP while abroad.
