Birth Year from Age in Photo
When you find an old family photograph, you can estimate the subject's birth year if you know (or can estimate) how old they appear and approximately when the photo was taken. This tool calculates the range with a margin of error.
Estimated Birth Year

Best Estimate—
Earliest Possible (min age, earliest photo)—
Latest Possible (max age, latest photo)—
If still alive today, current age—
Generation relative to 2024—
Dating Old Photographs
Daguerreotype (1839–1860) → silvery, mirror-like surface
Tintype (1856–1900) → on metal, often in cardboard folder
Cabinet cards (1870–1900) → large prints on cardboard backing
Real photo postcards (1900–1950) → photo on postcard stock
If you know the format, you can narrow the year range significantly.
